Winter Quarter – Dec 2015 / Jan,Feb 2016 February 21, 2016 | Lesson 12
ADULT / YOUNG ADULT (18 AND ABOVE)
DAY OF ATONEMENT
Bible Basis: LEVITICUS 16:11-19
BIBLE TRUTH: God commanded the Israelite to set aside a day to sacrifice animals for payment for sin debt.
But the goat chosen by lot as the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the LORD to be used for making atonement by sending it into the wilderness as a scapegoat.
They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”
He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation,
God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood–to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished–
For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.
1 John 3:5
But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.
1 John 4:10
This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
1 John 4:14
And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.
MEMORY VERSE: Read LEVITICUS 16:16
Lesson Aim: By the end of this lesson, we will EXPLORE the Day Atonement rituals found in Leviticus; REFLECT on the meaning of atonement for our sins and its relevance today; and IDENTIFY those things in our lives needing repentance and seek atonement.
